Coskata Coatue Wildlife Refuge

The Coatue Wildlife Refuge is a stunning natural sanctuary covering 395 acres of the barrier beach that serves as a safe haven for Nantucket Harbor from the Sound. It is home to many rare plants and birds and boasts some of the island’s most impressive beaches, minus a few private holdings.

This area is overseen by the Foundation for Conservation, and Coatue is part of a larger 104-acre refuge system at The Haulover, owned by the Foundation. Additionally, the 916-acre Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is owned by the Trustees of Reservations, and the 42-acre Nantucket National Wildlife Refuge at Great Point is run by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A truly remarkable and diverse spot, the Coatue Wildlife Refuge is essential to the island’s precious ecosystem.

Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is a special place, made up of two long peninsulas, with rolling dunes and hundreds of acres of bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. It is a popular summertime destination and a wild, remote barrier beach.

The refuge is a constantly shifting landscape, with the north shore and east ocean beach bearing the brunt of strong winds and stormy tides. This ever-changing beach provides essential habitat for wildlife and plants adapting to these conditions. Gray and harbor seals feed on the fish and other creatures in the Great Point riptide while also utilizing the nearby beach as a spot to rest and haul out.

Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge Tours

Embark on a journey of exploration with a Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge Tours over-sand vehicle (OSV) beach tour. They will be offering tours during the 2023 season. Click here  to discover more and book a spot. Discover the remarkable flora and fauna of the refuge, and explore the diverse salt marshes, barrier beach system, and ocean. Watch for bird species such as ospreys, northern harriers, American oystercatchers, piping plovers, terns, and seals.

Each tour is approximately two hours long and departs from the Wauwinet Gatehouse in an OSV. If you need to cancel your tour,  give at least 24 hours’ notice. 50% of the fee will be refunded.  Cancellations made within 24 hours of the tour departure and no-shows cannot be refunded. Traveling in the OSV is done so at your own risk. As a bonus, purchase an OSV seasonal permit and get a complimentary Family-level Trustees Membership.

A permit is required all year round to drive onto Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge, and they can be obtained at the Wauwinet Gatehouse on Wauwinet Road between May and October. Last season’s permits will expire on March 31, 2023; new ones for April 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, will be available for purchase online from February 2023 here. When you buy your permit online, your vehicle details will be available on the gatehouse database within 24 hours – no additional paperwork is required. You must present your vehicle to receive your permit.

The gatehouse will open on May 2023 with regular opening hours of 9 AM-5 PM through October, with extended hours in July and August. Visiting the refuge is restricted to soft-sand roads that can only be navigated by four-wheel drive vehicles.

Those driving an All-Wheel Drive (“AWD”) vehicle are not permitted on the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge due to the difficult terrain, which includes soft sand and rutted ground. This ensures visitors have the best and safest experience possible.

A day-use fee of $50 applies to all rental vehicles, and these must also have a permit that states ‘COSKATA-COATUE WILDLIFE REFUGE’ placed by the rental company. If you rent for more than a day, each additional day is only $10. This can be purchased at the gatehouse or pre-booked through the rental car company.

Day Passes are available for those with personal vehicles, but owners must contact the rental car service for more information. If you’re looking for assistance regarding rental cars, we recommend you check out their FAQ page, it’s the best resource for getting the answers you need.

In order to protect nesting shorebirds, seasonal vehicle restrictions are in place during the breeding season at Coatue. There may also be restrictions due to erosion. While vehicles are restricted, pedestrians are welcome but must follow fences and signage and remain out of restricted areas. Signage has been posted at the property for the purpose of providing visitors with the necessary safety precautions, requirements, and rules.

Here are a few pieces of advice and rules to keep in mind.

Beach driving on the island can be both beautiful and challenging. Paths to Coatue’s tip are especially arduous due to the deep sand, so make sure your 4WD vehicle is up for the task. There is a 15mph speed limit to be followed, and all existing vehicle tracks should be respected – don’t drive through the dunes or create new trails. This protects the natural beauty and allows all beachgoers to enjoy the majestic scenery. Enjoy the view, but stay safe on the sand.

Be warned that seals are wild animals and can be a hazard. They will pursue fish that have been caught on a line and are drawn to fish that are being filleted. To remain safe, do not approach or feed seals. Be aware of your environment; seals may come up to your vehicle if you have fish. Additionally, keep an eye on children, as they are at risk of cutting off a seal’s escape if they are playing near the water.

Steamship Authority Nantucket

Travelers to Nantucket can board a ferry from Hyannis, Massachusetts, for a swift and convenient journey. Passengers can be transported to the island in two hours and fifteen minutes. However, the fast ferry, which takes an hour, has some amenities that make it more comfortable to go the distance with a concessions stand, and one can roam around on the outside cabin, which is nice on a beautiful afternoon.

Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority offer quick and easy year-round access from Hyannis to Nantucket. Their high-speed passenger catamarans have an approximate travel time of one hour. The Steamship Authority provides a car-and-passenger ferry. It’s an enjoyable two-hour ride that’s sure to be memorable. Secure parking is available at both the Hyannis terminals, with accessible spaces and a nominal fee.

In the summertime, Freedom Cruise Line in Harwich Port and Seastreak in New Bedford, New York City, and Highland, NJ, offer high-speed ferry service to the island. Furthermore, Hy-Line Cruises run an inter-island ferry between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard from May to October. This ferry service is only available during the warmer season.

History

The Steamship Authority has a long and illustrious history. The Nantucket Steamboat Company, established in 1833, holds the roots of the story.

With the opening of the Hyannisport station of the Cape Cod Railroad in 1854, a need for a reliable steamship link between the island of Nantucket and the Cape Cod emerged. This initiated the start of a new era of sea-faring. The company responded by building a terminal near the rail station, changing its name to the Nantucket and Cape Cod Steamboat Company, and replacing its two vessels with the Island Home – the first ship specifically designed for the Nantucket Sound.

In 1945, the New England Steamship Company, facing financial difficulties, was sold to Massachusetts Steamship Lines. Three years later, in 1948, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts declared its aim to combine all private ferry services into one state-owned agency. This was the beginning of the Woods Hole, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamship Authority, established in 1949 and later shortened to just the Steamship Authority in 1960. The Nobska was the last steamship in service, traversing the Woods Hole-Nantucket route until 1973.

Several of the current vessels bear names that are embedded in Island culture. The Nantucket moniker has been used by four different vessels over the years. The current vessel is the MV Nantucket, which has been in service since 1974. Before that, the SS Nantucket sailed from 1957 to 1987, though it was renamed Naushon in 1974. From 1925 to 1973, there was a steamboat known as the Nobska but referred to as Nantucket from 1925 to 1958. The original Nantucket was in use from 1886 to 1910.

M/V Iyanough

The Steamship Authority proudly operates the M/V Iyanough, a high-speed passenger ferry that shuttles between Hyannis and Nantucket, Massachusetts. This vessel was commissioned in 2007 and was constructed by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding to a design by Incat Crowther. Measuring 154 feet in length and 39 feet in beam, the Iyanough has a draught of 5.3 feet and a capacity of 393 passengers – 350 inside and 40 outside.

The Iyanough offers full accessibility on the main passenger deck – restrooms, food, drinks, and a transfer bridge for boarding. For any special needs, you might have while boarding, simply alert a crew member when you arrive. At the Iyanough, they strive to provide every passenger with an enjoyable and accessible experience. M/V Woods Hole

MV Woods Hole is a reliable vessel, perfect for transporting both passengers and vehicles. It was finished being constructed in 2016 and measures 235 feet in length with a 64 feet beam and a 10.5 feet-loaded draft. This ferry can transport up to 385 people and also can fit up to 10 tractor-trailer trucks or 55 cars, with a service speed of 14.5 knots. If you want to make the most of a summer in the Cape Cod area, consider hopping on the ferry to the beautiful island of Nantucket from Hyannis. Or, if it’s a year-round trip you’re after, Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard is an excellent option.

M/V Nantucket

MV Nantucket is a 230-foot-long ferry owned and operated by the Steamship Authority. She was constructed in 1974 by Bollinger Shipyards in Jacksonville, Florida, and has been serving the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard ever since. Her name was inspired by the sidewheeler Nantucket, a 19th-century steamer that was also traveling between these two islands. During the winter, the ferry travels between Hyannis and Nantucket, and throughout the year, it travels between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard.

M/V Eagle

The M/V Eagle was constructed in 1987 by McDermott Shipyard. Rout served between the Islands and Hyannis-Nantucket year-round. This vessel was a marvel of its time, as it was a steam-driven side-wheeler and was one of the first to provide a way to move goods and people between two destinations.

All of their large passenger and vehicle ferries are equipped with elevators that can take you from the vehicle deck up to the passenger deck, including the food and beverage service area. To ensure everything runs smoothly, please arrive at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. When you get to the terminal, let the terminal agent or the employee checking you in know that you need access to the elevator. This applies to all passengers, regardless of whether they travel with a vehicle. Additionally, each ferry has accessible restrooms available.

If you’re planning to take a journey with your car to Nantucket, it’s wise to make a reservation ahead of time. Doing so will give you the peace of mind that your trip is all set. Suppose you can’t get a reservation and you or a passenger have a disability that requires you to bring your vehicle. In that case, you can request to talk to a supervisor to discuss a special Preferential Boarding accommodation.

Individuals with disabilities who must travel with their vehicle due to their disability may be eligible for preferential boarding. Reasons for needing to travel with a vehicle could include needing to bring a motorized wheelchair, needing a specific oxygen supply, or needing other equipment due to their disability. For your ticket, you can expect to pay a minimum of $400 for a round trip if your vehicle is up to 17 feet 5.18 meters. If you’ll be traveling in a larger vehicle – 17 to 20 feet, like a full-size SUV, then the fee is $450. So be sure to plan ahead.

The Hyannis and Nantucket terminal buildings have all been designed to be wheelchair accessible, with bathrooms that also accommodate those who require such assistance.

Stepping onto some ferry will make you feel like you’ve already started your vacation. Enjoy the fresh sea air and sensational views on the deck, or settle into a warm, comfortable spot indoors.

Nantucket is a mere 26 miles from the mainland of Cape Cod’s port of Hyannis. Take a relaxed 2-hour and 15-minute ride on one of their traditional ferries from Hyannis to Nantucket. Or, if you’d like to get there a bit faster, hop on board their seasonal high-speed vessel only for passengers, the M/V Iyanough, for a speedy voyage that takes only an hour.

Naushop Nantucket

Nestled in classic Nantucket fashion, Naushop is a picturesque neighborhood. The homes in this neighborhood are adorned with iconic white picket fences, brick pathways, and street lamps. The lawns are immaculately landscaped and manicured, with rose-covered arbors and classic Nantucket quarter boards. This high-end, organized community provides excellent value on the island. Naushop is close to Town, the shoreline, the airport, shopping, bicycling trails, and public transport – all the amenities you need!

The Naushop Homeowners’ Association offers membership to the community clubhouse. The neighborhood boasts a pool, tennis courts with synthetic turf, a pickleball court, a Little Free Library, and a playground perfect for children. All these amenities are accessible to residents, renters, and their guests. The Clubhouse is for Owners only for private parties or events. These special gatherings require Owners to sign a use agreement, deposit, and pay the associated fee.

Take a dip in The Pools, which are open daily from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM during the season! Homeowners and registered tenants can enjoy the pool with a valid Naushop recreation tag. Every Naushop home has been provided with six recreation tags, so use is restricted to that amount. Tennis and Pickleball courts are bustling from 7:30 AM to 7:00 PM daily during the season. Homeowners, registered tenants, and their guests with valid recreation tags can take advantage; proper clothing and footwear are a must. Items such as glass containers, alcoholic beverages, food, and animals are not allowed on the courts, which should only be used to play tennis.

When you’re finished taking advantage of this neighborhood’s amenities, exploring the rest of the island is a breeze. Naushop’s proximity to the Surfside, ‘Sconset, and Town bike paths makes it a breeze to reach the beaches, trails, and Town. Plus, it has the bonus of being situated near the gorgeous shorelines of the south shore. It’s only 4 miles to Cisco Beach and 1.2 to 1.5 miles to Surfside/Nobadeer/Fisherman’s Beach. ‘Sconset Beach is 5.5 miles away, while Monomoy/Polpis/Shimmo beaches are 1.5 to 3 miles away. That makes getting to and from the shore a breeze!

Take a leisurely stroll down the street, and you’ll find yourself at the Nantucket State Forest and Nantucket Disc Golf Course. This is a great spot to take your dog or kids for a walk or challenge your friends to a round of frisbee golf. The park is kept in great condition, with designated trails, and it’s a place sure to keep everyone entertained.

Naushop is in an ideal spot near restaurants and amenities and is easily accessible by the wave bus service. Crosswinds Restaurant is a local favorite. Situated at the Nantucket airport, it offers delicious food with a beautiful view of the airfield. They’re open all year round! Tail House is a delightful restaurant with classic Thai dishes.

This high-end neighborhood offers tremendous value on the island, creating a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Also, this is the perfect neighborhood for families with young children, and it’s an area where people can relax and feel right at home.

Nantucket Dreamland Drive-In Theater

The Nantucket community has provided incredible support to build the drive-in at 7 Nobadeer Farm Road. This project would not have been possible without their hard work and generous donations. Through a Go Fund Me campaign in the spring of 2020, the drive-in received over $180,000 from more than 500 contributors. This money was used to purchase necessary equipment and to construct the needed facilities – including a projector, which gives The Dreamland a lot of variety in their movie selection.

In 2020, the drive-in operated with a 39-car capacity, and in 2021 has been approved for up to 60 vehicles. Although the experience will be reminiscent of the past, the movies will combine new releases and old favorites.

Payment is per vehicle, not per person – tickets must be bought online before the show, not at the gate. So, to ensure you get your spot, it pays to plan – tickets are expected to sell out quickly! In case of bad weather, screenings will be canceled, and ticket refunds issued.

Arrive early for a prime parking spot – all vehicles are arranged in a triangular pattern, giving everyone a great view of the screen. The parking opens at 8:00 p.m., and gates close at 8:30 p.m. The movie will start close to 8:30 in the evening. Remember to bring your e-ticket with a QR code, either printed or available on your phone.

When parking, keep your speed to 5mph and follow the instructions of Dreamland staff to get your spot – then, turn off your engine and stay in one place. No access to the playing fields or lawn seating – if you’re using chairs, keep them in the back of your vehicle so you don’t take up extra space.

To have a sound, tune in to station 93.9 and get ready to enjoy the film with sound broadcast directly to your car radio. Before the movie starts, make sure your car ignition is off. Dreamland offers limited concessions, but you can bring your own snacks, takeout from your favorite spot, and non-alcoholic drinks. Note that alcohol is not permitted.

Dreamland is a family-friendly event, be mindful of your language. No smoking, pets, open flames, or illegal drugs are allowed. When walking on the grounds in the dark, being aware of your surroundings is essential. Uneven surfaces can be difficult to spot in the dark. Do not honk your horn or turn on your car lights unnecessarily. After the movie, don’t forget to take everything you brought with you when you leave. Maria Mitchell’s Discovery Camp Programs

The Maria Mitchell Association comprehends that practical experience is much more beneficial than theoretical knowledge. That’s why  Summer Discovery Camp Programs are here to help kids from ages 5 to 16 increase their knowledge and appreciation of the outdoors and to teach them to protect our natural environment. They have six different camps that last for one week each, and each offers a unique combination of fun and science! Kids can explore beaches, snorkel, hike, learn survival skills, and participate in programs about animals, island history, and kayaking.

The youngest campers (ages 5-6) can join Wee Explorers, while Habitat Hoppers (ages 7-9) and Eco-Investigators (ages 10-12) can explore the great outdoors. They also have specialized programs for Junior Historians (ages 7-11) and Junior Astronomers (ages 7-11). Finally, teens aged 13-16 can join the Teen Naturalist Leadership Program.

Camp Lighthouse

Camp Lighthouse is a summer program that celebrates child-centered play and projects to create a fun and meaningful experience for all campers aged 4-12. It provides a diverse art, athletics, nature education, and outdoor exploration program that lets kids just be kids.

On Tuesdays, campers show their creative side by tie-dyeing their t-shirts. On Thursdays, they can show off their unique talents at the Camp Lighthouse Talent Show. Nantucket Boys & Girls Club

The NBGC Summer Camp Program is the ideal place for your child to have an incredible summer with working hours Monday-Friday. Suitable for 2nd to 8th graders, the summer program NBGC Summer Camp runs between 7:30 am-4:00 pm. Camp Junior, for incoming 1st graders, takes place between 9:00 am-3:00 pm.

Dreamland Stage Company – Children’s Theatre Programs

Dreamland Stage Company puts on a spectacular full-length musical. It’s a great chance for kids to explore the world of theatre. No matter the experience level, this program offers a unique opportunity for kids to express themselves through performance. It’s divided into three age levels, each with learning and performance opportunities.

Dreamland Kids, ages 4-8, get to present what they have created for family and friends in ahold six one-week sessions, culminating in a grand show on Friday.

  • 4 to 7 are First Explorers

  • 12 to 13 – Warrior Camp

  • General Skating

Public Skating is an all-year activity at Nantucket Ice! Skaters aged five and under must be accompanied by an adult. Kids on Ice is a twice-weekly, after-school program that caters to children between the ages of 5 and 12. Thursdays are for K-5 graders, and Fridays are for 6-12 graders. Helmets are required and are available at the rink. Registration is required for this program. Family Public Skate is a Sunday event that welcomes local youth and their families. Free Style Practice allows higher-level skaters to practice independently, while a certified coach must accompany lower-level skaters.

  • Ice Hockey

For adults aged 18 and above, for all skill levels, you can join Adult Puck and Stick sessions to practice your skating and shooting skills. Necessary equipment includes a helmet, gloves, stick, and hockey skates. Puck and Stick sessions are open to skaters of any age and level of ability. Adult Open Hockey – gather your friends and make for a full ice hockey game.   • Learn to skate

Spring Basic Skills and Free Style class – perfect for those just learning or striving to improve their skating skills. Spring Popsicles class is designed for children aged four and up who are Kindergarteners. Here, they will learn the fundamentals of skating, such as marching, gliding, and stopping. This class is also great for those who are transitioning into ice hockey. Fun on the ice with the Spring House Performance class!
